Or on the other hand, do these stories simply fulfil the role of an entertaining story? In any case it’s clear that the stories in MOBA games do have an effect on us. But as with all companies and markets, the goal is to earn money. One thing to keep in mind is that MOBA games haven’t existed for very long in the gaming industry. Well perhaps that is the truth, or maybe half of it. So is the sole purpose of the story to keep players in the game and make money? And the only difference between now and then is that the story is cut up in pieces to make gamers stay in the game for a longer time? I mean, the background lore does raise one’s interest and curiosity. So in the end it’s negative but the gaming industry wants to make money. Nowadays it’s the same principal –– which is to earn money. Then one would wait for the next part to come out, which could take a year or two. Those games had complete stories, so you would play it and finish the story line. Back in my days games were released like once every year. Turner: Well, the concept of stories in games hasn’t changed much. Strand:Do you think this is negative or positive? ![]() It also works like a sort of “kick” in the game. The stories are often released in bits like episodes, and it makes players want to come back to the game. Turner: I think It’s a bit like magazines and comics. Strand:What effect do you think the concept of stories has in MOBA games? So the lore does have a positive effect on game-play, but is that the only reason gaming companies put so much effort into it? I ask Craig Turner, a 32 year old former Blizzard employee. Hummelgren: I think most players think like me, but I think there are also those who really use the lore to become part of the story. Strand:Do you think there are players who do feel like they become part of the story? Strand:So you don’t feel like you become a part of the story?” Hummelgren:Personally I think that reading the lore can make the game more interesting, since you get a better understanding of the story. Strand:What effect do you think reading the lore has on the game? Right? I ask Axel Hummelgren, a seventeen year-old student and former geek, for his opinions. The lore or elements of MOBAs can make the game experience more fun. Another interesting characteristic is their lore. All MOBA games have certain things in common such as their game-play and the goals of the game. MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, and this genre is gaining popularity in the gaming market, where they are often referred to as MOBAs. Amongst these MOBAs, League of legends ( Lol) and Defence of the Ancients 2 ( Dota 2) are two of the most popular. This is part of the lore about a champion in League of legends, a MOBA game. “This place will burn, not by cinder flying or breath of wind, but by the vengeance of my hand.” And so the epic tale continues… or does it? You may think it’s part of an epic tale (one would perhaps hope so) but it’s not. ![]() A review of the use of stories in MOBA-games
